Today is Madhya Pradesh’s foundation day; manufacturing, health, education, and skill development must be expanded.

Indore

Much has changed in the 69 years since Madhya Pradesh’s founding. Despite the predominance of agriculture, industry, services, food, tourism, and real estate have flourished, yet there are some sectors that require attention. In Malwa-Nimar, Indore, Ujjain, and Omkareshwar have become major centers of religious tourism, contributing 7,000 to 8,000 crore rupees to the state’s GDP. New corridors are now opening and new roads are being built, further strengthening the economy.

This will require greater focus on health, education, manufacturing, and skill development.

Economic analysts say agriculture contributes 45% to the state’s GDP, while industry has accounted for only 19% for two decades. While the country’s GDP growth has been 5.6% in the past 20 years, Madhya Pradesh’s GDP has been higher, at around 7%. If Vision 2047 is the goal, then the manufacturing sector within the industry will have to be expanded. Currently, the state’s employment is 50% dependent on agriculture; this will have to be reduced and shifted to other sectors.

According to urban planner Hitendra Mehta, while Indore was a trading market after independence, it has now become the cleanest and smartest city in the country. Indore Metro, Smart City Project, IT Park, and Industrial Belt have made it the capital of the ‘smart economy’.
